Fire Equipment Manufacturers’ Association Announces New Study Showing Portable Fire Extinguishers Reduce Carbon Footprint of Building Fires
Using portable fire extinguishers in buildings with automatic sprinkler systems can result in a 99% reduction in fire-related carbon emissions. Tweet this A recent study conducted by the Fire Equipment Manufacturers’ Association reveals that structure fires contribute between 0.5% to 1% of the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. However, by effectively using portable fire extinguishers in buildings with automatic sprinkler systems, a significant reduction of 99% in fire-related carbon emissions can be achieved. The study also showed that people are more likely to use portable fire extinguishers if they are readily available. Jim Tidwell, a code consultant for the Fire Equipment Manufacturers’ Association, emphasized the importance of installing and using portable fire extinguishers in all buildings as it is the most effective way to reduce the carbon footprint associated with building fires.
