Dr. Smith received a Homer Venture Award for Outstanding Service and a McCluskey Award for Outstanding Research in the field of public health. She is a member of the International Food Additives Council (IFAC), the Natural Products Association (NPA), and the International Probiotics Association (IPA), where she currently holds the position of President.

Dr. Smith is highly respected for her role as a global regulatory strategy lead for International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF), where she has focused on the global regulatory landscape of probiotics and other ingredients used in dietary supplements since 2012. She ensures compliance in manufacturing and translates clinical science into consumer-friendly health benefits for food products and supplements.
Dr. Smith started her career in 1999 with the Division of Laboratories in the Louisiana Office of Public Health, focusing on molecular diagnostics. She later moved on to DuPont Qualicon where she partnered with food companies and regulatory agencies to implement food safety testing using rapid, genetic methods of detection and typing. Throughout her career, Dr. Smith has played a strategic role within the DuPont (now IFF) probiotic business as the global regulatory representative and liaison between business and regional regulatory teams.
Dr. Smith has achieved several awards, including a Brown Foundation Research Excellence Award, a Morals and Ethics Award, and a Technical Excellence and Value Creation Award from DuPont Nutrition and Biosciences.
Dr. Smith received her bachelor’s degree in 1993 and her Doctor of Philosophy in microbiology in 1997, both from Louisiana State University. She looks forward to continuing her contributions in the regulatory space and expanding avenues for regulators to understand the power of the microbiome on a deeper level.
