Mr. Preece obtained a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah and a Doctor of Philosophy in the same discipline from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. He has had a successful career spanning over 40 years in the fields of rock mechanics and explosives engineering.
Mr. Preece began working at Sandia National Laboratories in 1980, where he conducted various rock mechanics-related projects and tested and designed explosive devices. During his tenure at Sandia, he served as a principal and distinguished member of the technical staff and led a team of engineers and technicians on several explosives engineering projects. He also developed computer modeling methods to predict the results of rock blasting.
From 2007 to 2017, Mr. Preece worked at Orica as a senior research associate and global technology manager, where he developed rock blasting software and led researchers in designing software for predicting the effects of rock blasting. He also developed a new focused energy explosive booster. After his time at Orica, he served as a senior consultant at the Moncourt Group in 2018 and as a general manager at Dyno Nobel, where he developed blast modeling capabilities using advanced computing resources.
Mr. Preece’s noteworthy contributions to explosives engineering were recognized in 2017 when he received the Distinguished Service Award from the International Society of Explosives Engineers (ISEE). He has authored numerous technical papers and journal articles, contributed to books, and served as the editor of the ISEE’s Blasting and Fragmentation Journal. In his future endeavors, Mr. Preece aims to continue his exemplary work as a general manager at Dyno Nobel.
