Representative Debbie Dingell (D-Michigan) has stated that President Joe Biden should not interfere in the ongoing negotiations between the United Auto Workers (UAW) union and major automakers, as reported by The Hill here.
Dingell expressed her belief that the president should not be present at the negotiating table, emphasizing this stance from the beginning.
This statement follows reports that President Biden has sent top aides, acting Labor Secretary Julie Su and senior aide Gene Sperling, to Detroit to assist in resolving the issues between the UAW and three major automakers: General Motors (GM), Ford (F), and Stellantis (STLA).
While Dingell opposes direct involvement from the President, she does acknowledge the important role policymakers play in understanding the concerns of workers and companies.
Dingell’s comments come as union stakeholders express concerns about Biden’s electric vehicle (EV) policy, fearing its impact on their jobs and wages. The strike, now on its third day, began after the UAW rejected a 21% wage increase, deeming it insufficient.
