Ron DeSantis, the Governor of Florida and a Republican candidate for president, has intensified his verbal attacks against Donald Trump, his rival in the GOP primary, focusing on crime and immigration. According to The New York Times, DeSantis pledged to work toward repealing the bipartisan criminal justice reform legislation known as the First Step Act, which was enacted during Trump’s presidency. He criticized the reform law for allowing dangerous people out of prison who went on to commit further crimes. He also blamed Trump’s policies on crime for undermining law and order in Florida.
Regarding illegal immigration, DeSantis portrayed himself as a staunch opponent of amnesty legislation during his time in Congress, earning criticism from Trump. DeSantis also repeated his attacks on Dr. Anthony Fauci’s lockdowns, calling them harmful, and criticized Trump for giving Fauci a presidential commendation on his last day in office. DeSantis’s recent criticism of Trump comes after a Twitter launch that had technical difficulties, delaying the campaign’s debut.
