MIRAMAR, FL, May 23, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ — Marquis Who’s Who has included Dr. Stavros Stavropoulos in its latest biographical volumes to recognize his outstanding contributions to medicine. The selection process for inclusion in Marquis Who’s Who biographical volumes takes into account factors such as current reference value, position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field.
As a child, Dr. Stavros Stavropoulos planned on pursuing a career in business after being fascinated by Aristotle Onassis’s larger-than-life persona and career. However, after reading Sinclair Lewis’s “Arrowsmith” on his 11th birthday, gifted to him by his father, he was inspired by the novel’s depiction of an idealistic doctor, prompting him to pursue a career in medicine. Dr. Stavropoulos expanded his professional knowledge by earning a Bachelor of Science in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale University, an MD from Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, and completing internships and residencies in gastroenterology, as well as a fellowship in advanced endoscopy at New York Presbyterian and Columbia University.
Early in his career, Dr. Stavropoulos gained invaluable expertise in the field as an advanced endoscopist at New-York Presbyterian-Columbia and as the director of endoscopy and the director of the advanced endoscopy program at Winthrop University Hospital. His career highlights include serving as the director of endoscopic ultrasound and therapeutic endoscopy for NYP Columbia, an associate professor at New York University, an adjunct clinical professor of medicine for Temple University and Columbia University, and as chief of endoscopy and director of the Program in Advanced Gastrointestinal Endoscopy at NYU Langone Health-Long Island.
Dr. Stavropoulos is highly regarded internationally for his groundbreaking work in POEM, a revolutionary advancement in the treatment of achalasia, an esophageal swallowing disorder. Dr. Stavropoulos was the first Western Hemisphere operator and second operator worldwide to perform POEM in 2009, following thoracic surgeon Haruhiro Inoue’s first human POEM in Japan months earlier. Dr. Stavropoulos is the highest volume POEM operator in the US, published the most extensive and comprehensive single-center Western POEM series to date, and spearheaded the effort culminating in the POEM white paper, which was a joint undertaking of the two main endoscopy societies in the US, SAGES and ASGE. Dr. Stavropoulos is also a pioneer in ESD, with recent publication of the largest Western single-center ESD series, and EFTR/STER, novel and demanding endoscopic surgery techniques that allow curative removal of cancers and tumors of the gastrointestinal tract without resorting to surgery. Dr. Stavropoulos is frequently invited to lecture and provide instruction, and perform live demonstrations in the United States and abroad. In 2008, he founded a live endoscopy course (“Long Island Live”), which, over thirteen years, explored Endoscopic Surgery’s frontiers and became the pre-eminent live course in this field. Dr. Stavropoulos is a member of SAGES, fellow of the AGA and ASGE, and one of the few international endoscopists recognized with fellowship honors by the Japanese Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (FJGES), one of the world’s oldest and most respected endoscopy societies.
Currently, Dr. Stavropoulos serves as the Archbold Medical Center’s chief of endoscopy and director of the program in advanced gastrointestinal endoscopy and endoscopic surgery. He performs innovative endoscopic surgery procedures such as ESD, POEM, and EFTR that he pioneered while also providing training in these areas as part of an advanced fellowship program. Dr. Stavropoulos has been awarded fellowship honors by the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society, the American Gastroenterological Association, and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. He has been named a Top Doctor by Castle Connolly and New York Magazine and received an honorary fellowship from the Japanese Gastroenterological Endoscopy Society. Dr. Stavropoulos takes the most pride in introducing POEM to the United States in 2009, which has proved to be a boon for achalasia patients. His pioneering work in this area paved the way for gastroenterologists to perform POEM alongside surgeons. Dr. Stavropoulos anticipates that his career will continue to grow and thrive in the coming years.
