Elon Musk, the owner of Twitter, has voiced his support for “untamed free speech,” highlighting its importance while responding to a Tweet by a user.
The comment came after someone mentioned the effectiveness of Twitter’s community notes feature in creating a free speech environment compared to CNN’s practices. In response to this, Musk said, “Untamed Free Speech FTW” (for the win).
This statement is consistent with Musk’s well-known views on unrestricted expression and free speech, which he has previously expressed.
The user who commented on Twitter’s community notes feature was responding to CNN’s criticism of the platform’s transformation under Musk’s ownership.
According to CNN, during a Twitter Spaces session with Musk, where Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced his 2024 presidential bid, the news outlet referred to Twitter’s transformation under Musk as a “febrile circus of untamed free speech.”
While responding to this criticism, DeSantis applauded Musk’s commitment to freedom of speech, while Musk pledged to transform Twitter into a space for open and inclusive discussions.
When Musk acquired Twitter in October 2022, he positioned the platform as a champion of free speech. However, his commitment to free speech has been questioned in the past, particularly when he complied with a censorship request by Turkish President Erdogan ahead of the 2023 Turkish Elections.
Recently, billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban shared his view on Musk’s reach and control on Twitter, acknowledging that while anyone can access the platform, Musk’s influence far surpasses others.
