TROY, MI, September 18, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ — Gordon E. MacKinnon, PhD, licensed clinical psychologist with MacKinnon Psychological Associates, has been chosen by Marquis Who’s Who for a featured article in the Detroit regional edition of Forbes magazine.
Dr. Gordon E. MacKinnon is an accomplished clinical psychologist and former educator with over 30 years of experience. He obtained his psychology license in 1986 and has been running his own private practice, MacKinnon Psychological Associates, since 1997. In addition to his private practice, he served as a psychology professor and department chairman at Rochester University in Michigan for 20 years. He also directed the MacKinnon Psychology and Counseling Clinic, which was named after him in 2017.
Early in his career, from 1993 to 1994, Dr. MacKinnon completed a clinical internship and residency in psychology at the Wyandotte Hospital and Medical Center. He worked with adolescents in the center’s psychiatric partial hospitalization program. In addition to his primary roles, he has volunteered for various prostate cancer support groups through Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan, for more than five years. He has also served as vice president of the Academy for the Psychoanalytic Arts and has authored numerous publications.
One of the most engaging experiences of Dr. MacKinnon’s career was working with a group of individuals who survived a plane crash. He helped them navigate feelings of guilt and confusion, which fueled his interest in trauma and stress response syndromes. His current research focuses on the effects of medical and catastrophic trauma and stress on patient-caregiver relationships, particularly in cancer patients. He has also taught courses on modeling the psychology of media phenomena in horror and speculative fiction.
Outside of his professional pursuits, Dr. MacKinnon enjoys handset type printing on an antique letterpress printing press that he purchased as a teenager. He used the press to print his daughter’s wedding invitations in 2013. In his free time, he grows bonsai trees and practices amateur magic tricks.
Dr. MacKinnon received a Bachelor of Science in religious education from Rochester University and a Bachelor of Science in human resources development from Oakland University in 1981. He went on to earn a Master of Arts in marriage and family therapy from Wayne State University in 1987, and a Doctor of Philosophy in clinical psychology from the University of Detroit-Mercy in 1997.
Dr. MacKinnon has been recognized for his achievements throughout his career. He was named Distinguished Faculty of the Year by Rochester University in 2014 and was included in the list of Top Docs in Psychology in 2020.
