A recent survey conducted by Intelligent.com reveals that 50 percent of educators are now requiring students to submit handwritten essays in order to discourage the use of ChatGPT, an AI-powered tool, for written assignments. However, despite the efforts to deter its use, many educators consider ChatGPT to be both a helpful and challenging resource. According to the survey, 63 percent of respondents believe that ChatGPT assists students’ learning abilities to some extent, while 24 percent believe that it hinders their ability to learn. Additionally, 13 percent of respondents reported that ChatGPT has no impact on students’ learning.
Professor and Higher Education Advisor Diane Gayeski emphasizes the importance of recognizing that ChatGPT is just one of many language models with the ability to generate text or find resources. She suggests that it is crucial to introduce AI tools and their limitations to students, as they will likely encounter them in their professional lives. Gayeski draws a parallel to other automated aids, such as spreadsheets, which have already been incorporated into educational settings.
The survey also revealed that 66 percent of respondents stated that their schools have established policies regarding the use of ChatGPT by students. However, 29 percent reported the absence of any policies, while 5 percent were unsure. Additionally, 63 percent of educators claimed to have used AI detection tools to identify if students had utilized ChatGPT for their assignments. Out of this group, 94 percent found the tools to be fairly or very effective, while 6 percent deemed them ineffective.
The Intelligent.com survey was conducted online by the survey platform Pollfish starting from September 6, 2023. It gathered responses from 228 participants who completed the entire survey.
