British actor Stephen Fry is disturbed by the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) to spread disinformation. He recently discovered that his voice from the Harry Potter audiobooks was used without his consent to create an AI version that says things he has never said before.
Fry revealed this during the CogX Festival, where he played a clip of the AI system mimicking his voice to narrate a documentary. The clip was so convincing that it shocked him.
According to Fry, the AI voice narration was created by using words from his narration of the seven volumes of the Harry Potter books. It was a “flexible artificial voice” that could stitch together coherent sentences.
Fry emphasized that this misuse of AI voice technology could potentially have serious consequences. He warned that deepfake videos created using AI technology could become increasingly convincing and dangerous.
Fry’s experience raises concerns about the ethical implications of using AI to create nonconsensual content. It remains to be seen how this issue will be addressed in the future.
