Judge Martin, with almost 50 years of experience in the legal field, is recognized as senior counsel of Potter Anderson & Corroon LLP, the oldest Delaware law firm.
Wilmington, DE, May 24, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ — Joshua W. Martin III has been inducted into Marquis Who’s Who. He was chosen on the basis of current reference value and factors such as position, achievements, visibility, and prominence in his field.
Judge Martin, who joined Potter Anderson & Corroon LLP in 2005, has focused his practice on mediation and arbitration, and business counseling, especially in telecommunications, public utilities and governmental relations. He played a key role in organizing the Multicultural Judges and Lawyers Section. With many professional accomplishments, Judge Martin is particularly proud of being the first person of color to serve as a judge on the Delaware Superior Court in 1982. He attributes his success to his parents, who provided strong guidance and never allowed him to make excuses for what he wanted to achieve in life.
In the past, Judge Martin served as president and chief executive officer of Verizon Delaware Inc. from 1996 to 2005, which was formerly Bell Atlantic Delaware Inc. He joined Verizon’s predecessor, Bell Atlantic, in 1990 as vice president, general counsel and secretary. He served on the Delaware Public Service Commission from 1978 to 1982, with three years as Chairman, and practiced law for Hercules, Inc., from 1974 to 1982.
Judge Martin’s academic journey played a significant role in his performance in the field. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in physics in 1966 from Case Western Reserve University, where his academic advisor suggested that science and technology might not be the best career fit for him and recommended that he consider law. After spending eight years working in research and development at DuPont, Judge Martin decided to pursue a law degree and obtained a J.D. from Rutgers Law School in 1974. He began practicing patent law at Hercules Inc., in Wilmington, Delaware.
Moreover, Judge Martin is dedicated to civic advocacy and supports existing actions. He has been named the Best Lawyers “Lawyer of the Year” for Mediation in Wilmington as well as for Arbitration in Wilmington. He holds several certifications and is licensed to practice in the U.S. District Court for the Districts of Delaware and New Jersey, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, among others.
Judge Martin and his wife, Cynthia Primo Martin, have three children, Heather Mitchell, Alexis Martin and the late Victoria Martin, and two grandchildren, Alex Buonfiglio and Carter Mitchell. In his free time, Judge Martin enjoys golf, music as well as audio-video reproduction.
