Prior to his current role as Principal Diamond Scientist for CNPC USA, he worked as an R&D Specialist for Sandvik and Diamond Innovations/GE Superabrasives, focusing on innovative development in diamond-related tool manufacturing. He has also worked as a Group Materials Advisor for Apex Tool Group, leading frontier exploration of advanced materials research and materials processing technology. During his illustrious career, He has managed over 20 NPI projects and has contributed 14 innovative cutting tool products for oil and gas drilling, aerospace/automation machining/grinding, electronic LED lapping/dicing, and hand/power tool applications.
He has 70 patent applications, with 29 patents granted and 5 traded secrets in the super-hard and tool industry. He has also published over 50 peer-reviewed research publications and 20 international conference proceedings, including more than 10 invited presentations. In 2015, his excellent contributions were recognized when he was elected as a distinguished contributor for Sandvik R&D Day. Also, in 2021 and 2022, CNPC honored his research achievement in super-hard materials with #1 and #2 awards.
Before joining the industry, he was a research professor and PI of nanocrystalline materials at MSE, Northwestern University. Additionally, he contributed to the materials research society as a peer reviewer for several key journals.
Kai Zhang is dedicated to his profession and considers materials research as his lifelong hobby. He was particularly inspired by his mentor, Professor Julia Weertman of Northwestern University, during the early stages of his research career. Before immigrating to the United States, he started his career as a staff scientist and materials characterization laboratory manager at the Institute of Metal Research at the Chinese Academy of Science in 1991.
Mr. Zhang is also devoted to his religion and participates in bible studies and volunteering activities in society.
