“Many of my clients already have, or are expressing interest in, replacing foam padding with honeycomb, a paper-based product engineered to be strong, durable, and a cost-effective answer to providing superior protection that is lightweight and recyclable.”

Manufacturers, retailers, and businesses are looking for eco-friendly and cost-effective options in packaging materials. Inspired by bees, some paper companies are now offering a strong and protective paper-based product called “honeycomb” to safeguard items during transit.
Nicole DeJoris, President of Pinnacle Packaging based in Lombard, Illinois, has found this type of protective packaging to be increasingly popular among her clients.
“Many of my clients already use, or are interested in replacing foam padding with honeycomb. This paper-based product is engineered to be strong, durable, and provides superior protection at a lower weight and cost-effective price. Besides, it’s recyclable,” she explained.
As a packaging alternative, honeycomb is made up of hexagonal cells that are sandwiched between paper sheets that keep them in place and add to the product’s overall strength.
DeJoris highlighted that one of her clients is on target to switch 50% of their foam-based protective packaging with honeycomb. “Its versatility, strength, and shock-absorption qualities, together with the fact that it costs roughly a third of what foam costs, make it an attractive choice,” she said.
On the environmental front, honeycomb products are easier for consumers to recycle. As the Harris Poll conducted on behalf of The Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) revealed, “two-thirds (66%) of Americans agree that ‘If a product is not easy/convenient for me to recycle, I probably would not recycle it.’”
Honeycomb products come in various sizes and densities. They can be die-cut according to specific requirements and are extremely strong. They can be used as edge and corner protectors with strapping, as pallets and pallet-runners that support a significant amount of weight.
As the European Manufacturers Paper Honeycomb Association (PMPHA) points out, honeycomb products have the highest strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratio as a sandwich core while having “low impacts on the environment and society.”
DeJoris further commented, “While honeycomb products have been around for decades, they’re becoming increasingly popular in line with the ‘less is more’ trend in packaging.”
