Born in Berlin, Germany, to Werner Ernst Strelau and Gerda Gertrud (Bargel) Strelau in 1951, Renate Strelau immigrated in 1959 with her mother, father and brother to Calgary, Canada, whereupon they immigrated to Los Angeles, California, in 1960.
Ms. Strelau’s parents viewed their two children – 12 months apart in age – as equals, and gave each much freedom, love and joy, as well as extensive exposure to nature. Ms. Strelau’s only sibling, Klaus Strelau, is a continuing lecturer, occasionally teaching as primary instructor at the University of California at Berkeley’s Department of Philosophy.
Ms. Strelau began her professional life by enrolling in 1969 at the University of California, Berkeley, from which she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in political science in 1974. Berkeley’s vibrant intellectual milieu inspired her to debut her artwork in a 1973 one-woman show at the landmark Café Espresso in Berkeley, California.
After graduating from the University of California, Ms. Strelau received a certificate in Arabic language proficiency (written and oral) at the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University in Washington, DC in 1976. Subsequently, she worked as a research assistant at the Embassy of Iran in Washington, DC between 1976 and 1980.
Over the course of her tenure at the Iranian Embassy, Ms. Strelau was tasked with detailing the tumultuous events of the Iranian Revolution, thus permitting her to grasp the Islamic fervor and counsel nuclear caution. Analyzing the news from around the world, she penned features for the Embassy of Iran’s “Profile of Iran” magazine. Notably, Ms. Strelau ended her work with the Embassy of Iran on the day that the United States severed diplomatic relations with Iran and the embassy closed.
Ms. Strelau, continuing to broaden her academic outlook, in 1985 earned from American University in Washington, DC a Master of Arts in American history and diplomacy. In 1991, she concluded her studies at American University with a Master of Fine Arts in painting the human figure. Ms. Strelau would later showcase more of her impressive artwork with a solo exhibition at Riggs Bank in Arlington, Virginia, in 1994 and 1995.
Following this endeavor, Ms. Strelau presented pathbreaking historical research at a 1995 international historical conference in Annapolis, Maryland, to a standing room only audience positing art’s power over war. Ms. Strelau also contributed to a group show at the Khoja Gallery in Arlington, Virginia, in 2002.
Between 2004 and 2005, Ms. Strelau was invited to exhibit her work in a solo exhibition for the Bank of America Corporation in Arlington, Virginia. She displayed her art significantly at an international scholarly conference in history in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2007. There, via often-profound exchanges of ideas, Ms. Strelau elaborated on art’s ascendance since the mists of time and around the globe, in contrast to war’s increasing futility.
Ms. Strelau participated in the California art scene in the following years. Los Angeles and the nearby San Fernando Valley gave ample opportunity, as did the area’s soul-stirring Pacific Ocean. In 2015, Ms. Strelau’s portrait photography was selected for an international group show in a pretty garden in Puttaparthi, India.
Outside of the previously cited art exhibitions, Ms. Strelau’s drawing of “A Rose” is permanently represented in the American University Art Museum in Washington, DC. Moreover, she is affiliated with prominent organizations in her areas of expertise, namely the American Historical Association, the Organization of American Historians and the Society Historians of American Foreign Relations, the latter as a lifetime member.
Ms. Strelau’s history and art focus gathered momentum in the late 1990s, when she began to practice and compete in the South Korean martial art of taekwondo. Since 2017, she has competed in international martial arts tournaments throughout the United States, in which she expresses skills of Shaolin kung fu and wushu. Furthermore, Ms. Strelau accepted an invitation to schedule the presentation of her new research, “Time in History; China’s Martial Arts, da Vinci’s 1519 Death and United States Diplomacy,” at a global scholarly history conference in Portland, Oregon in 2020.
Additionally, Ms. Strelau has been profiled in numerous editions of Who’s Who in the South and Southwest, Who’s Who of American Women, Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World. Marquis Who’s Who honored Ms. Strelau’s work in 2017 with its distinguished Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2021, Marquis Who’s Who compounded its appreciation of Ms. Strelau’s historical research and art by recognizing her as an industry leader. In 2022, the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP) presented Ms. Strelau with the esteemed Top Artist of the Year award.
Ms. Strelau attributes her success to her hard work, as she is a firm believer that there are no shortcuts, and that she should explore further on subjects she finds interesting or worthy of following. Renowned for her perseverance and patient demeanor, she was further motivated by the fact that she is not alone in her search for knowledge or fascination on certain issues, which enabled her to work in collaboration and inquire about different points of view. As such, Ms. Strelau emphasizes the importance of communication to other professionals in the field of research.
Among the highlights of her career, Ms. Strelau feels humbled to have connected the importance of the abstract expressionism art in New York at the end of World War II with the artistic momentum throughout the country that spoke to people louder than the atomic bomb. Discussing her research in scholarly venues, she was able to help shine a light on mankind as human beings instead of instruments and victims of war, which captured the core themes of her work in many ways. Looking toward the future, Ms. Strelau hopes to continue her wushu training, as she considers her instructors to be extraordinary and acknowledges her experience as exceptional thus far.
Ms. Strelau’s historical research now includes a political theory of beauty with roots in Chinese yin and yang. Ballet’s links to government in Russian history is a blossoming subject for her. More travel is also on her agenda. Ms. Strelau is conscious of climate change and she is optimistic.
