Tesla has started delivering the latest version, Hardware 4 (HW4), of its self-driving technology on the Model Y. The news broke on Twitter, with users posting images of the distinctive red HW4 cameras equipped on the Model Y. This version includes a powerful computer board, extra connections for cameras, an updated GPS module, and a possible reintroduction of radar. Tesla has not issued a formal statement regarding the release of HW4, but the HW4 is a much-anticipated upgrade.
In March, a Reddit post showed one of the first HW4 deliveries on a Model X. The new cameras on the HW4 offer a superior resolution of 5MP compared to the hardware 3 setup of 1.3MP, making the sentry mode feature produce higher-quality video recordings. A sales associate also shared that the new vehicle was radar equipped.
With the introduction of the much-awaited HW4 in the Model Y, Tesla has continued its trend of introducing major upgrades without any formal announcement. The news of HW4-equipped vehicles was earlier hinted at by internet rumors. The HW4 upgrade has brought significant improvements to Tesla autonomous driving technology.
