Tesla Inc CEO Elon Musk announced on Tuesday that the company plans to reveal the location of their new factory before the end of the year, leaving many wondering if India may be a consideration.
When asked about the possibility of a new facility in India, Musk responded with an enthusiastic “Absolutely,” according to Reuters.
This news follows Tesla’s recent announcement of plans to open a gigafactory in Mexico. These moves are part of the company’s effort to increase global production.
However, this renewed interest in India comes almost a year after Tesla put their plans to introduce electric cars to the country on hold due to a failure to secure lower import taxes. Currently, discussions are said to be taking place between Reliance Jio, one of India’s largest telecommunications companies, and Tesla about the possibility of developing a private network exclusively for Tesla operations. However, talks cannot proceed until Tesla confirms their plans to build a manufacturing facility in India.
Tesla executives are also expected to meet with officials from the Indian government to explore sourcing opportunities for parts made in India.
