“These best practices are just the tip of the iceberg and many will forever remain secret. But the right solutions will help operators create their own.”

With the summer just around the corner, hospitality operators are preparing for the upcoming pool season. This year, technology is playing an important role in increasing booking revenue and operational efficiency. The Property Experience Management System (PXMS), a new category in hospitality technology, provides innovative capabilities that unlock new strategies and approaches to attract more satisfied guests to swimming pools.
UrVenue, the pioneer of the first PXMS in the hospitality industry, identifies four best practices being used by the top pools in 2023:
1. Automate inventory yielding
Pools can yield prices for lounge chairs and cabanas, which is an effective way to maximize revenue. Although this technology has been available for hotel rooms, the capabilities have been reimagined for other experiences beyond the hotel room.
“Pools can now automatically increase prices based on the volume of remaining inventory and pre-set price schedules,” said UrVenue Chief Growth Officer Tracee Nalewak. “Once these settings are configured at the start of the season, all of the pricing is updated across all connected channels, and price changes are instantly reflected throughout the season. However, if the strategy changes, operators can easily adjust their yielding in a few clicks.”
2. Cross-sell and upsell cross-property experiences
Pools can offer guests other property experiences, such as restaurant and spa reservations, by cross-selling them in the same booking journey. This eliminates the need for guests to repeat the booking process or visit a different website. By implementing an integrated booking journey, operators can create a seamless digital experience, offering all inventory on one website, within one shopping cart, and requiring only one transaction.
“An integrated journey can also make it easier to sell add-ons, such as towels and umbrellas, or upgrades, such as premium beverage packages or locations,” Nalewak said. “Leveraging all of these experiences and amenities can provide the best possible experience for guests.”
3. Offer curated experiences
Create unique, customizable experiences that entice guests. Design a birthday-themed celebration with the best cabana, an exclusive menu for a holiday, or a unique experience that requires some creativity.
“Guests will quickly book these services if they’re offered at the right time and place,” Nalewak added. “Make sure that there are multiple ways to cater to the outlier guest; as guest demographics broaden, their spending ranges do as well. Then, insert these premium services into an integrated booking journey where guests are most receptive to the offer.”
4. Monitor and analyze collected data
Regularly review upselling and cross-selling efforts and validate yielding strategies. By adopting a modern, data-driven approach to address these questions, pool operators can continuously improve sales and operations for years to come.
“These best practices are just the tip of the iceberg, with many remaining secret,” Nalewak said. “However, implementing the right solutions can help operators create their own practices.”
